The Kansas State Fair starts tomorrow, and I could not be more excited. The atmosphere of the state fair is one that most can’t forget. The sounds of all of the livestock, the smell of fried food, and the sight of all of the people who come out to enjoy the event. Being a 4-H member for ten years and an FFA member for five years I always find the state fair a great place to reconnect with friends from other places. Also, the family time that takes place at the state fair is irreplaceable.
I come from a family of four girls. Being the youngest, I got to experience having all of my sisters move away. Because of this, I am thankful for any time I get to spend with my whole family. The state fair is something that brings our whole family together. I have shown livestock my whole life, but I’ve come to realize that it hasn’t been how I have done in the show ring that I remember. It has been the memories that I have made with the people.
The livestock shows at the state fair are very competitive. This makes it really enjoyable to both watch and compete in. However, sometimes I wonder if we lose sight of the real reason behind livestock shows. At times, I find it helpful to reflect on what showing livestock has provided for me. First, it has taught me the value of work ethic. Second, it has allowed me to create a passion for the agriculture industry. Finally, it has shown me the importance of good sportsmanship. Showing livestock can’t be all about winning and losing. If it was, many of us would be disappointed a lot of the time. It has to be about the experience and opportunities we gain from being involved in such a great lifestyle.
Jim Elliot shared, “Wherever you are, be all there.” This weekend at the state fair I will be showing livestock, but more importantly, reconnecting with people who I have created relationships with. My focus will be on being all there. Whether it is when I am showing my lamb in the ring, creating memories with friends and family, or simply having a conversation with a passerby, I will be all there. Kansas FFA, this year as we serve our communities, how are we going to BE ALL THERE?
