Information Updated 8/03/2021

The individual problem-solving component (formerly a team event) will consist of a 20-item exam with multiple-choice responses over equine selection (judging), management, and production. Refer to the National CDE Handbook for other team activity possibilities. Each question is worth 1 point for a total of 20 points per individual.

Halter classes may be represented by the following breeds and types: Quarter Horse, Conformation Hunter, Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint, Morgan, and Draft breeds. All halter horses will be judged as sound. Performance classes may include Western Pleasure, Reining, Ranch Riding, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Hack, Trail, Hunt Seat Equitation, and Horsemanship. The American Quarter Horse Association rulebook will be used in all performance classes. All tack and clothing will be considered legal. All horses will be judged as sound.

Students are advised to take notes on all classes to assist in questions. After each class is judged, a set of 6 questions will be asked. Contestants are not allowed to use any outside sources during the contest including, but not limited to, preprinted material, websites, phones, smartwatches, teammates, or other individuals.
